You'd think the FBI learned their lesson...

Back in the 60's and 70's, the FBI was notorious for watching political dissenters. Of course, the 60's and 70's just exposed a program that had gone on for decades under Hoover (J. Edgar, that is). Back in the 50's, we can all remember the blacklistings in Hollywood. It was the FBI that followed, hounded really, these "dissidents" around. For the majority of them, their only crime was exploring communism during their youth. How many careers and lives were ruined by the FBI in those days?

The FBI hounding political dissidents is old hat. Just ask Martin Luther King, Jr. Or John Lennon. Yeah, there is a terrorist if ever I saw one. Hell, even Benjamin Spock has an FBI file. Of course, the baby doc is just as well known for his acts of civil disobedience.

So, why should we care now that the FBI is back to their old tricks? Why should we worry that agents are interviewing people who they feel will attend protest rallies at the Republican National Convention (RNC)? Why should it bother us that several people have been scared into staying away from the RNC because they have been scared by the FBI?

Where was the FBI when protests were planned at the Democratic National Convention?

Because we are a nation founded on dissent. Our Fore-fathers claimed independence rather than face a political system that did not allow for fair representation.

We hear about programs like Operation TIPS, that would have created domestic spying. But be afraid, because even though TIPS failed, we already have a domestic spy agency. It is called the FBI.
