rant

The Bush/Cheney campaign has sent a memo to American churches asking pastors and church members to send their membership rosters to the campaign to help "mobilize" voters.

Further, it asks the congregations to identify another church in the community and get them to send their membership rosters to Bush/Cheney. Along with this, churches are to recruit within the church to hold voter registration drives.

It is one thing to get church members to register, but to actively request churches as a body engage in partisan politics is downright cheap, and possibly illegal.

Aside from that, it would affect the tax exempt status of the church. Not to mention that it is the height of hubris to assume that all church members would automatically be supporters of the beady-eyed facist.

Personally, if someone in my congregation gave my personal information to a political campaign without my permission, they would be responding to a court summons.
