Ok, I was discussing it with a friend today so I thought I would take a moment here to discuss the current "scism" in the Catholic Church.
rant
The Vatican stated that communion should be withheld from all politicians that advocate abortion. There is a group of Bishops that advocate withholding holy communion from politicians that do not follow the dictates of the Catholic Church. I have noticed that this seems to be centered on the abortion issue, and thus, is directed towards the Democratic camp. The issue is becoming polarizing, and in my opinion, thinly-veiled conservative politics.
If the idea of following the doctrine of the Church is so sacrosanct, then why has the Church been quiet on the issue of Republican Catholic Congressmen who support the death penalty, or who support the war in Iraq? A war that the Pope has come out against publically?
This particular subject was broached in the response letter signed by 48 Catholic Democratic Congressmen who decry the Church's attempt to enter into U.S. politics. While the Vatican has at least come out against the war, mayhaps it is time for them to instruct their U.S. clergy as to the idea that the Church considers the death penalty to be murder and support of a Republican agenda is support of this sin as well.

note: the author acknowledges that congressmen includes both men and women, but did not want to blur the commentary to cover political correctness.
