Further and further down the slippery slope we slide.

The U.S. Justice Department issued a memo stating that if a government employee were to torture a suspect in captivity, "he would be doing so in order to prevent further attacks on the United States by the al Qaeda terrorist network."
The memo apparently also said "necessity and self-defense could provide justifications that would eliminate any criminal liability."
On Monday, the Wall Street Journal noted that a Pentagon report on interrogation methods indicated that the president was not bound by laws prohibiting torture.
?????
We are bound by the Geneva Conventions regarding the treatment of prisoners of war. Torture is expressly forbidden. Any government that has tortured prisoners used these same arguments to justify it. We did not accept it as a legitimate excuse for them, so why is it suddenly a legitimate reason for us?
When did we decide that we are the arbiters of morality and what is good for us is not necessarily good for others? When did we become the rule-breakers?
We are torturing prisoners. We MUST stop or we become the bad guy we purport to be trying to stop. Or is it too late? Have we already become that bad nation? We are vilified by other "civilized" nations. We are vilified by the world population.
When are we going to start thinking for ourselves and vilify our own government for dragging us down to this level and calling it patriotism?
