From www.cnn.com:
Bush on Iraqi militants: 'Bring them on'
Challenging militants who attack U.S. forces in Iraq, President Bush said Wednesday they would be dealt with harshly, and declared, "Bring them on." For the second day in a row, Bush vowed that attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq will not shake his administration's resolve to stay in that country until a strong and stable democratic government takes root.
rant
Of course he can be strong-willed. None of his children are there. None of his friends' children are there. The sons and daughters of ordinary Americans are the ones dying and risking their lives in Iraq.
I am not a big fan of the British, but I do respect the fact that it is a matter of pride and tradition for their "upper classes" to perform military service. Prince Andrew is a Royal Navy fighter pilot. The peers of England have always fought along-side the populus.
Say what you will about them, and they have made themselves laughing stocks in recent years, but when the nation called, Kennedys fought... and died for America. Unfortunately, they are the exception to this rule. The American elite send their kids to hide in the National Guard or Canada. This leads me to believe that none of their kids are enlisting there anymore given the number of units activated for Iraq.
Something else telling about our "leaders:" When the Nazis bombed London, Parliament insisted that the royal family flee into the countryside for safety. Not only did they not, but the Queen toured the bombed out rubble and made sure the country saw her. She became a symbol for the people of England and bolstered their resolve to fight on.
When terrorists blew up the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon, our American leaders fled into hiding to protect themselves first and foremost. Did Bush walk the ruins of the WTC? Yes, but not until it was deemed safe. He could claim his handlers made him go into hiding, but that did not stop the Queen of England in WWII. The American message is that our leaders consider themselves to be far more important than we are.
