rant
When the Democrats requested the oval office to ask the House Republicans to pass a more generous Senate sponsored unemployment plan, they were met with silence. In late November, White House Spokeman Air Fleischer refused, repeatedly, to issue a clear statement on the president's position regarding unemployment extensions. Finally, President George Bush has spoken regarding the pervasive joblessness problem that has swept across our nation in the time since he has taken office.
Unemployment extensions end for many workers on December 28th, three days after Christmas. How many families will have a poorer holiday, find despair during a time set aside for celebration? How many children wake up disappointed leaving parents with the stress of some self-imposed sense of failure?
Why was this issue not dealt with during the recent Congressional special session? While Bush has called for the extension to be retroactive, are we to now suddenly believe that Junior has worried about this oh so pervasive problem all along?
Bush's Politburo, erm... political arm have long been known as the power behind the administration. Strong words against Al-qaida and now against Iraq have kept the popularity of Junior soaring. Calls to arms against the great Satan Saddam have echoed across the country. This rhetoric has allowed the White House to ignore many domestic social ills for far too long.
Unemployment figures reached 6% in November. Finally, his lack of domestic policy has become a thorn in Bush's side. Yes, people will be able to breathe easier after New Years. The question is: who should they thank?
It is obvious that Bush is only taking action to enhance his re-election chances. He has made all his father's mistakes and now he is trying to avoid the same one-term fate. Well, I say too little, too late.
