rant

I am back to Operation TIPS. Seems that civil liberty groups have been going nuts over this whole concept. Glad I am not the only one who sees the danger.

For those that have not been following, TIPS is a government program that calls on service people with access to private and public properties to watch for terrorist activities and report it to a central clearinghouse location. TIPS sponsors promise that no data will be kept in a centralized location; it will strictly be disseminated to the "appropriate" agency.

Well, it seems that the U.S. Postal Service will not allow its employees to participate in this program. It is good to see that at least one government agency has not completely lost its collective mind. Suddenly, I do not mind paying $.37 for a stamp.

Operation TIPS has now announced that it is dropping its private property provisions and only recruiting people who can eavesdrop on public areas. I am sure everybodies favorite lapdog, John Ashcroft is just seething over all the notoriety for his once unknown program.

Speaking of Ashcroft, he was defending the TIPS program's private property clauses by noting that repairmen are already free to pass along information to the FBI and other agencies. Well, if that is true, what do we need with Operation TIPS, Mr. Ashcroft?
